A return to Stella’s roots for Autumn 2023

Autumn 2023 is a return to Stella’s roots; a reinforcement of iconic styles brought into the now with contemporary details, new cuts and pioneering materials. The collection reaffirms an ageless attitude, inspiring youthful adventurousness and timeless sophistication.

It is Stella McCartney’s most nature-positive collection to date, with 94% of ready-to-wear styles made from conscious materials.

This season, Stella was especially inspired by a love for trees and Mother Earth – embodied in texture, an earthy colour palette and sculptural silhouettes, as well as in forest-friendly viscose that reinforces our zero-deforestation commitment.

We have developed the fabric into a modern library of exclusive weaves and finishes, alongside traceable wool, regenerative cotton and Alter Mat fabric made from banana and grape waste.

Forest-friendly viscose

Forest-friendly viscose

From tailoring to satin, our forest-friendly viscose is innovated time and time again throughout our Autumn 2023 collection.

It is a versatile fabric, created from wood pulp and sourced from responsibly managed forests in Europe and the US. It is FSC-certified, traceable and never from ancient or endangered forests – verified by the CanopyStyle Audit.

Rooted in a love for trees

Abstract renditions of tree bark patterns are rendered in jacquard and shiny black double weave fil coupé lurex on forest-friendly viscose dresses and separates, while a woodgrain pattern is also woven in a combined cloque and brocade technique onto Savile Row tailoring and asymmetric bias-cut skirts.

The same unique tree bark pattern is expressed across woodgrain teddy oversized belted coats and jumpers, crafted from a camel/cream cruelty-free wool blend. This plant-based conversation branches into collaged monochromatic ‘wallflower’ prints on organic silk dresses.

Sss-ave our skins

Autumn 2023 also centres on the python print, bringing attention to the exotic skins industry that we stand firmly against and have done since day one. This season’s python print is seen across organic silk chiffon skirts, tied shirts and dresses, as well as asymmetric forest-friendly viscose jersey ballet dresses and airy taffeta trench coats.

A soft new Alter Mat vegan animal leather alternative is tailored into blazers and biker jackets, alongside cropped furry jumpers and miniskirts. Oversized belted coating is handcrafted from recyclable crimped Fur Free Fur in an intricate oat and grey irregular patchwork.

Stella was also inspired by young Stella women deconstructing their grandmothers’ classic wardrobes. Vintage pieces, like mouliné tweed wool tailoring, are styled in modern ways and screened in pink and beige. Boxy, cropped jackets with frayed hems are nestled with wide-legged trousers, square-necked dresses and over-checked bouclé camel wool tweed miniskirts.

This old-school glamour reverberates in pearls, embroidered onto black tailoring alongside dripping trompe l’oeil prints on organic silk satin pyjama sets, as well as sexy silver body chains styled under tops and tailoring.

A wardrobe of Stella Iconics

Continuing the ageless attitudes Summer 2023, the collection reinterprets iconic Stella styles with elevated finishes and S-Wave details – subtly integrating the new brand mark.

Forest-friendly viscose is innovated into diaphanous double satin against encrusted Alençon leavers lace edges, modernising a design from Stella’s Central Saint Martins graduate show.

Rounded banana sleeves and new brushed traceable wool coating fabric give shape and tactility to shirting and outerwear, hallmarks of Stella’s signature Savile Row tailoring. The wardrobe construction theme lends a modern edge to sharp suiting with rounded double-breasted topcoats, collarless jackets cinched with tie-around belts and oversized blazers worn with glinting body jewellery – a carryover from Summer 2023.

Autumn 2023 is a focal study on ‘the perfect one’ – taking Stella’s own wardrobe staples and making it indelibly Stella with the perfect volume, just-the-right length and textures that subtly celebrate Mother Earth.

Done denim

Season-ready blanket coats draped over 2000s double denim embody the Y2K nostalgia that courses through from our Summer 2023 runway collection. Consciously crafted, as always, from organic cotton, denim is a mainstay in the ‘Stella DNA’. It is elevated further with two-tone washed denim chap jeans.
