Platinum Dream: The Stella McCartney + Sorayama unisex capsule

Desire. Design. Technology.

We have joined forces with Japanese artist on a limited-edition unisex capsule – a celebration of and collaboration with his work, crafted from 100% conscious materials. The Stella McCartney + Sorayama collection was launched with an exclusive event at our Aoyama boutique, bringing together next-generation creative forces around shared values and aesthetics; embodied by campaign star Iris Law.

This sense of community and comradery is woven into the very fibres of Stella McCartney + Sorayama, with the two having been friends for decades. This marks their second collaboration, having already partnered on the McCartney A to Z Manifesto in 2020. Once again, they use fashion and art to communicate messages of sustainability and sensuality to a rising generation.

I came across Sorayama’s work in the late 90s when I was living in Paris and was absolutely mesmerised by its cheeky sensuality and airbrushed quality. I met with him when I was next in Japan; we have been friends and I have been collecting his art ever since. He makes me laugh in a naughty way, and I hope this capsule communicates the playfulness and mutual admiration we have between us.

Stella McCartney

Genderless, ageless and effortless Stella staples become a wearable canvas for Sorayama’s art, rendered in sharp detail on ready-to-wear pieces and vegan accessories. The Stella McCartney + Sorayama capsule platforms a range of works by the Japanese illustrator, painter and sculptor – comprising silver strawberries, ‘Platinum Dream’ slogans and his iconic Sexy Robots. It includes an original artwork by Sorayama: a Vitruvian Woman in his singular ‘superrealism’ style, reimagined with Stella’s face.

I don’t know much about fashion, but I do know Stella has put her heart and soul into the brand and built it with extraordinary passion and determination. Let’s take care of ourselves and keep creating work. I love you ❤️!

Hajime Sorayama

Since 1978, Hajime has been recognised globally for his iconic Sexy Robot series – exploring the limitations of desire, the possibilities of technology and the ideals of femininity; his Platinum Dream. Brought to life through his superreal drawings, paintings and sculptures, his vision delves into intimate relationships with objects and has significantly influenced robotic imagery in the art world. Sorayama’s award-winning works are exhibited in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City and at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, amongst many others.
