post One City, One Girl: London

With a voice beyond her years, Stella McCartney meets emerging singer/songwriter, Dua Lipa as she puts her own stamp on our Spring Summer 16 collections. See why she loves London, as we go on a tour of her hometown.

Hey Dua. How did you get in to singing / songwriting?

I’ve grown up around music my whole life. My father was a musician and I grew up listening to him sing his own songs as well as songs he loved. It always inspired me and pushed me to make my playground dream a reality!

What do you write about and what or who influences your music?

I write about things that happen to me and the things that surround me. Most of my songs come from a very honest place which takes me to the exact place I wrote it and how I felt at the time. Sometimes I make stories up and later on realise how much of what I’ve written relates to me. It’s weird when that happens. Growing up I listened to mainly P!NK and Nelly Furtado (who I love so much and still listen to their old and latest albums) but during my teens I fell deeply in love with hip hop. I really love artists like J Cole, Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky and Chance The Rapper I like to call my music “dark pop” as to me it’s pop with hip hop influences.

Which was your favourite look from this One City One Girl shoot and why?

That’s so difficult to choose! I have two favourites! The first one is the ribbed green dress with the coloured Fur Free Fur coat and wicker Elyse shoes. Second was the black top and trousers from the Summer 16 collection.

I guess that would be my ideal day look and night look haha! The green dress is just so much fun and would brighten up your day just by putting it on! The black outfit on the other hand looks very effortless and so cool! I love the idea of not having to show too much skin to look or feel sexy! Clothes are meant to make you feel good and I had that instant feeling when I put all the looks on.

I write about things that happen to me and the things that surround me.

Describe your style in 3 words?

Nineties, Playful and Eclectic.

What item is your wardrobe must-have?

A slip dress. I can wear it with everything! Dress it up, or down and just so easy when I’m in a hurry and need to make an effort.

Who’s your favourite follow on instagram?

@watts.on. So much cool inspiration and so aesthetically pleasing.

How long have you lived in London and why is it home?

I’ve lived in London most of my life and it’s my favourite place in the world. There is always something happening here, there’s such an amazing energy about it. So many people complain about London’s weather but after a few days away I tend to miss the rain.

Where is your favourite place to eat in London?

Ethos! They do the best Miso aubergine ever. I always pop in there when I’m in a rush for a tasty health kick!

To someone who has never been to the city, what would you suggest are the top 3 things to do?

– A visit to the Serpentine Gallery
– A walk on Primrose Hill – it’s my favourite park!
– Drinks at the Sky Garden so fun for a cheeky cocktail with your friends overlooking London’s amazing skyline!

Tell us your guilty secret.

I’m a Belieber.

What’s in the pipeline for 2016?

More new music and videos! More shows which I’m very excited about, and after finishing my first UK tour earlier this month, I just can’t wait to get back on stage. I’m having the best time of my life and I never want the fun to stop!
