This Earth Week, the Clevercare initiative reminds us to consider the environment when caring for garments. Discover our ongoing series on the simple steps you can take today to love your clothes and the planet.
We consider ourselves a responsible company. So when you buy an item from us, we think it’s important that item lasts for years and can be repaired to save you having to buy it again or throw it away. This is why we believe in making sound, quality stuff! Extending the average life of clothes by just three months of active use per item would lead to a 5 to 10% reduction in each of the carbon, water and waste footprints. We’re asking that you carefully choose the clothes you wear and take the time to care for them with love.
Laundry accounts for around one-quarter of the carbon footprint of clothing. Washing clothes less often, washing at a lower temperature, using larger loads and tumble drying less is an easy way to reduce your environmental impact. We hope that you’ll join us in being kinder to the planet by washing your clothes less and at a cooler temperature – and saving on those energy bills while you’re at it. Try to avoid the tumble dryer, too.
25% of the carbon footprint of clothes comes from the way we care for them.
An estimated 350,000 tonnes of used clothing goes to landfill in the UK every year. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average American throws out seventy pounds of clothing every year with 85 percent ending up in landfill. When you realise how many resources lovingly go into making your clothes – water, fibres, energy, labour – you will probably think twice about throwing them away. Care for them; nurture them…keep them!
Clevercare is a care symbol, a website and communication campaign all rolled into one exciting initiative. It is a simple reminder to consider the environment when washing and caring for your garments.
