Our artisans 

The craftswomen are the heroes of our raffia basket bags. Our artisans are female Shalom Pride community group members based in Kitui, Kenya, in collaboration with the Ethical Fashion Initiative (EFI). The EFI was launched in 2009, a flagship programme of the International Trade Centre – a joint agency of the United Nations and World Trade Organisation. , in collaboration with the Ethical Fashion Initiative (EFI). Beginning with creative and cultural industries in fashion and textiles, the Ethical Fashion Initiative has rapidly expanded into artisanal pieces – promoting sustainable and inclusive development. The EFI now mindfully and gainfully employs over 1,000 people, most of whom are women. Skilled artisans are given good working conditions that respect international labour laws and honour human rights.  

Modern meets traditional craftsmanship 

The Stella McCartney Raffia Basket Bag (available in medium and large sizes) is consciously hand-woven from plant-based materials. All our artisans are skilled experts in working with non-leather materials and these basket bags are a fine example of modern craftsmanship meeting traditional techniques.

Its iconic logo shoulder strap is responsibly made from 100% post-consumer recycled polyester – reducing our reliance on virgin raw materials.
