Earth Day 2022

This Earth Day, Stop Milking It!

For Earth Day 2022, we partnered with Plant Based News and the MILKED documentary to Stop Milking It! Join us in protecting our planet and fellow creatures by signing MILKED’s petition – calling for a reduction in global dairy herds.

Earth Day 2022

Each year, the global dairy herd of over 260 million cows produces around 26 million tonnes of methane (100kg per cow, per year). Methane is over 84 times more potent in warming the atmosphere than carbon dioxide over a 20-year time horizon.

MILKED co-producer and activist Chris Huriwai

MILKED outlines the dairy industry's harms to Mother Earth and our fellow creatures – cruel to animals, creating pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, using excessive water and land, and destroying natural habitats. This is milking the planet of its resources today and robbing the natural world of tomorrow.

Dairy farms are responsible for a quarter of all nitrogen pollution and the number one risk factor for new zoonotic diseases like COVID 19 is the increased demand for animal protein. Reducing methane emissions alone would have an immediate impact on Earth’s climate –protecting wildlife and natural habitats, lowering the effects of greenhouse gases and saving lives.

Other milk facts:

  • It takes 1,000 litres of water to produce only 1 litre of milk
  • More than three quarters of our planet’s agricultural land is used to feed livestock, but this land only produces 18% of the world’s calories
  • The number one risk factor for new zoonotic diseases like COVID-19 is the increased demand for animal protein
  • Humans are the only mammals to continue drinking milk throughout our lifetimes

A lifelong vegetarian, showing a love for animals and Mother Earth has been core to Stella McCartney since day one. As a brand, we have never used leather, feathers, fur or skins. Having sold over 1 million of our vegan iconic Falabella bag, we have helped prevent the deaths of over 400,000 cows as well as the needless destruction of vital ecosystems like Amazon.

This is an urgent environmental crisis and we must act now to save wildlife – and our lives. For more information, watch the full MILKED documentary on Plant Based News’ YouTube channel.
