Winter 2022 Collection

STELLA BY STELLA: Sadie Sink in our Winter 2022 collection

Titled STELLA BY STELLA, the Winter 2022 collection is a celebration of Frank Stella – legendary American artist and one of the most important painters and sculptors of his generation. Blending the codes of both his work and Stella McCartney’s designs, graphics, textures and eccentric shapes from his archive are reinterpreted on iconic brand pieces.

Reflecting Stella women who are both creators and collectors, Winter 2022 turns pragmatic staples into effortlessly wearable art. This is personified by actor, animal lover and vegan Sadie Sink.

Captured by Stella’s personal friend Theo Wenner at The Ranch, a gallery and working horse farm in Montauk, the shoot treads a conscious line between fashion and art, nature and human. It is soundtracked by Paul McCartney’s ‘Live and Let Die’, the first time this iconic track has been used in a fashion context.

I’m a huge admirer of Sadie’s work. She and I have so much in common in our love of nature and Earth’s animals, but also a shared sense of empathy and ethics in how we live our lives. I’m so inspired by Sadie’s youth and yet her maturity in her ability as an actor.

Sadie shares Stella’s values and embodies youthful joie de vivre. She wears STELLA BY STELLA, featuring exclusive prints and patterns inspired by Frank Stella’s V Series (1968), Spectralia (1994), Ahab – From the Waves (1998) and Swan Engraving II (1982) works. This art-inspired collection is both infinitely wearable and sculptural, a striking antithesis amongst The Ranch’s animals and an exclusive exhibit of Frank Stella sculptures.

The Ranch is a 26-acre property, with its stewards using the space to care for the local ecosystem. A dichotomy of the natural beside man-man art, they curate world-leading exhibitions – including previously unseen Frank Stella studio sculptures, making it a synergetic platform to showcase Sadie for STELLA BY STELLA.

Captured also at John’s Drive-In ice-cream parlour and Atlantic Avenue Beach, the shoot embodies the synergy between all three creators. Stella and photographer Theo Wenner are long-time family friends with a shared love for the area – having grown up summering in the Hamptons. Joined once more by their collective love for Frank Stella, Winter 2022 marks their first-ever creative collaboration.

This season, the ageless knitwear introduced through Autumn 2022 is elevated further. It seamlessly incorporates Frank Stella’s art, pulling strong lines from his V Series (1968) and placing them on colour-blocked cropped jumpers, billowing balloon-sleeved knits and dresses. Shiny compact knits are given a sexy Stella spirit with sweetheart necklines, peplum waists and soft corset-inspired shapes.

Conscious fashion, art, nature, animals, music... This shoot was quintessentially Stella and brought together so many elements and people who I love. It almost felt like a family on the shoot, and that playfulness and energy translates into the iconic visuals Theo captured of Sadie wearing our Frank Stella pieces.

Winter 2022 speaks to the Stella woman who creates – and collects – beautiful things in all aspects of her life. Pieces are primarily made from responsible materials, continuing our mission of pioneering a conscious luxury movement and joining forces between creators.

True to Stella’s foundational staples, coats and tailoring move on effortlessly from Autumn 2022 – and, indeed, her Savile Row roots – with a dichotomy of the feminine and masculine. Men’s tailoring fabrics and tuxedo stripes are engineered in more fluid shapes with satin lapels and a painterly palette. Coats are responsibly crafted from Fur Free Fur, leaning deep into winter, and blown-out silhouettes are belted at the waist or elevated with Frank Stella’s iconic stripe patterning.

Underpinning the collection is organic cotton denim that progresses the season’s art aesthetic and ‘painter’ inspirations, speaking to the Stella woman that appreciates art, creates it and never compromises functionality.

From Frank Stella-inspired workwear jeans – traced with utilitarian topstitching – to biker pants and cropped flares, the artist theme continues with denim dresses and all-in-ones, structured denim tops with sweetheart necklines and slim-fit trucker jackets. Look for the washed-out flocked velvet finishes and industrial washes on classic denim.
