As a modern brand, we aim to make responsible decisions in every part of our business, including the way we design and operate our stores and offices.
We have created a Green Guidebook, updated each year, to help our stores run more sustainably. It provides guidelines using green energy, saving water, ensuring that waste is recycled and reducing our overall environmental impact.
Here are some of our stores’ eco-friendly activities and achievements:
Sustainable wood, packaging and paper
All the wood that we use within our stores and offices is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified. This means it comes from certified, sustainably managed forests. All of our packaging and paper is either FSC certified or from recycled sources. In general, we aim to use at least 50% post-consumer waste paper in all of our stores, helping us to become a zero waste business.
Energy efficient lighting
All of our new stores are lit using LED lighting. LED lights use 75% less energy than traditional bulbs, and last more than 25 times longer. This means we are drastically reducing the amount of energy it takes to power our shops and offices.
We currently have 48 free-standing stores including London, New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Paris, Milan and Shanghai and as of today 86% of them use LED lights on the shop floor. Those that do not currently use LED lights were built before this type of lighting was widely available; however, we are in the process of changing those over. By 2019 100% of our stores will be lit by LEDs.
In the UK, all of our stores and offices are powered by wind energy, provided by Ecotricity – a renewable energy company investing the money its customers spend on electricity into building new wind turbines.
In 2011 in the US, we opened our first ever Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified store. The Dallas based store is equipped with solar panels and energy efficient air-conditioning. We have since opened two more LEED certified stores in Las Vegas and Beijing.
Fittings and furniture
Whenever possible, we buy our furniture locally, or from auctions. Our Rome store is full of antique furniture.
