Were you a fan of the iconic story of Sleepy Beauty and Maleficent before working on this project?
I was always a huge fan of Disney, as was my mother and I grew up watching all the films just like most kids did, so when the opportunity presented itself and I was invited by Angelina Jolie to visit the film set, I jumped at the chance.
Which characters did you focus on when designing – were there particular traits that you wanted to depict in the collection?
I wanted to highlight all of the characters in the film, as Maleficent is so rich in the way that it observes different personality traits. I particularly enjoyed bringing the playful side of the gnomes to life – they are cute, weird and wonderful and I wanted to celebrate that by layering their personality onto a cool sweatshirt.
How did you approach putting your own stamp on the collection while also keeping the fairytale aesthetic?
Disney has a wonderful innocence that I didn’t want to shy away from; in fact I tried to celebrate Princess Aurora’s brilliant girlishness. I worked on a shoe that I have in my own range, called Linda, and I reworked it by adding a sprinkling of glitter. Nothing’s over the top but at the same time the collection doesn’t hide from the delicacy of a little girl’s attraction to a classic Disney Princess.
Do you have a favourite costume from the film, and in turn a favourite piece from the collection?
It’s got to be Maleficent. She’s a baddy with an unusual sense of goodness inside of her, so I wanted the costume to embody both the cheekiness and strength of character that she possesses. We’ve achieved this with gory visuals – like the bats – that have been feminised and made beautiful by foil printing on tulle.
The film features exceptionally fantastical costume – how did you introduce these elements into wearable pieces?
There is a darkness to Maleficent which can be really scary but at the same time visually brilliant. It was important that we maintained this balance and that little boys and girls feel both confident and comfortable when wearing the collection.
